Projection Mapping
2024

Role: Creative Technologist
Timeline: 7 week
Class: Projection Mapping
Teacher: Motomichi Nakamura

Software: Arduino Nano Iot, MadMapper
I am sharing four projection mapping projects from my class where I experimented with different media and tools. Using Arduino, sound sensors, and p5.js, I created interactive animations and illusions that transform surfaces and invite viewers to engage with light and perspective in new ways.

01

OLD HABITS

I’ve been exploring the idea of incorporating behaviors we used to associate with old TVs into our modern lives, particularly in how we interact with our devices today. Although people don’t watch TV as much anymore and are more focused on their phones, we still hold on to those familiar gestures when something isn’t working. By blending these nostalgic patterns with our current daily experiences, I aim to create a unique interaction design that resonates with our past while adapting to the present.

02

THE OTHER WORLD or there are always answers to questions

For this projection mapping project, the goal was to invent something new and unexpected. I was inspired by the idea of creating a perspective that feels like it’s hanging in the air—a kind of visual portal. I explored how a flat image could appear suspended in space and come to life when seen from a specific angle.

To enhance the illusion, I also projected a shadow onto a surface, making the image feel more grounded while still floating. This play between flatness and dimensionality—between presence and illusion—became the core of my visual experiment.

03

BREATH OF CHANGE

This project explores how simple human gestures can control and transform digital experiences. I used Arduino and sound sensors to detect breath as an input. Each time a viewer blows onto the sensor, it triggers a shift in the visuals I created and mapped using MadMapper. The result is an interactive installation where something as subtle as breath becomes a powerful tool for visual transformation.

04

UNLIMITED

The assignment was to create an animation and project it onto the Washington Square Arch. I used p5.js to design a looping animation called Unlimited—a mesmerizing visual that catches the viewer's attention and invites them to watch endlessly. The continuous motion and evolving forms are meant to reflect the feeling of being drawn in, creating a hypnotic experience that plays with time and focus in a public space.
